What is a chia seed?

Chia is a very nutritious ancient seed that has been commonly used in Latin American countries for thousands of years.

Is it the same seed as in those chia pets?

Yes, those are chia seeds! They sprout into microgreens, which you can add to salads or sandwiches, or just eat plain. They are similar to alfalfa sprouts in taste and texture.

What do chia seeds taste like?

When eaten dry, chia tastes a bit like a poppy seed. It is dense, small and crunchy. Soaked chia seeds absorb liquid and become very plump, sweet and soft like tapioca pearls, and can be used much in the same way.

How do I use chia seeds?

Sprinkle chia seeds onto salads, soups, yogurt, even into sandwiches and wraps.

Use chia in recipes that call for sesame or poppy seeds. Add to muffins, bread, cookies and cakes.

Chia absorbs 9-12 times its weight in water and can make a delicious tapioca-like pudding.

Can I use Nutiva organic coconut oil with buttery flavor as a butter-substitute when baking?

Yes. For best results when baking, use ¾ of the recipe’s indicated amount of butter, and replace the remaining ¼ with water.

What is the white spotting in the Nutiva organic hazelnut spreads?

The white to cream colored spotting or film in your spread is due to a naturally occurring fats within the product. This is normal and is to be expected. Some of the fat within the spread solidifies at cooler temperatures and will melt when heated. In cooler weather, place the jar in hot water for 10-15 minutes with the lid screwed on tightly to prevent water from getting in it. This will warm the hazelnut spread so you may stir it and it will be fine.

What is the smoke point of Nutiva organic coconut oil with buttery flavor?

Technically the smoke point is 400°F, which is the smoke point of our All-Purpose Coconut Oil. However the added vegan buttery flavor starts to break down and lose its strength at these higher temperatures. So, to retain the buttery flavor we recommend low to medium heat, not to exceed about 325°F.

What are Nutiva organic hazelnut spreads made of?

Are Nutiva organic hazelnut spreads vegan?

Nutiva organic hazelnut spreads are Vegan. All of the ingredients in our spread are vegan. However, there may be non-vegan ingredients handled in the same production facility. This statement is mostly intended for people with severe allergies where even traces of cross-contamination with an allergen could.

It’s not recommended. You should not heat organic hemp oil above 300°F in order to preserve the essential fatty acids (EFAs).

Could I fail a drug test after consuming Nutiva organic hemp oil?

No. Hempseed is not to be confused with marijuana. Although the two plants are related, hemp products contain only trace levels of THC and will not cause a psychoactive effect. Is Nutiva organic red palm oil raw?

Our Organic Red Palm Oil is not raw. To extract the oil, fresh-harvested organic palm fruit bunches are steamed around 200°F to release the oil from the fruit, then cold expeller-pressed to further separate the oil.

My Nutiva organic red palm oil has a strange consistency. Is that normal?

Some product separation is normal. Because our Organic Red Palm Oil comes from a fruit and is unrefined, the fats can sometimes separate. Once heated, you’ll see the oil becomes reincorporated. Specks and variations in color and consistency occur naturally in this oil.

Can Nutiva organic red palm oil stain my skin?

If applied directly to the skin, it will add a reddish orange color, but will wash off with soap and water.

What is Nutiva Organic All-Purpose Coconut Oil,?

Organic All-Purpose Coconut Oil is made from dried coconut meat. It has a more neutral scent and flavor than virgin coconut oil, and a higher smoke point, which makes it suitable for higher temperature cooking. Our Organic Virgin Coconut Oil comes from Southeast Asia, where the coconut oil is processed immediately upon harvesting. The creamy, white meat of the coconut is scooped out of the shell by hand. What you get is simply the creamy, fresh flavor of pure coconut.

What are the health benefits of Nutiva organic virgin coconut oil?

Our Organic Virgin Coconut Oil contains lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid also found in human breast milk. Lauric acid makes up about 50% of coconut oil. Fatty acids (also knows as medium-chain tryglycerides or MCTs) are easy to digest, provide the body with quick energy and may boost fat burning. MCTs may also help lower blood cholesterol levels.

What type of jars is Nutiva organic virgin coconut oil packaged in?

Nutiva packages our oil in three types of materials: Glass jars, clear PET and white HDPE. We have found the white HDPE holds up better for shipping via UPS or USPS during the hot summer months.

How do I cook with Nutiva organic virgin coconut oil?

My Virgin Coconut Oil has a discoloration on the bottom; has it gone bad?

Slight coloration of our virgin coconut oil is normal and is to be expected. Nutiva's organic virgin coconut oil is made with a dry, expeller pressed method. The oil is then filtered and bottled. There is a thin brown papery skin on the outside of the coconut meat underneath the shell. Some of that will come out with the meat as it is hand scooped out of the shell. Even after pressing and filtering some of it will remain in suspension in the oil as very small particles. Over time it will settle out and cause a coloration to the oil, especially at the bottom. This is normal.

Does Nutiva organic virgin coconut oil need to be refrigerated?

No, Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil does not need to be refrigerated. As a matter of fact, if you put coconut oil in the refrigerator, it becomes nearly as hard as rock, a feature which can be useful in warm weather. The product has a shelf life of at least two years.

How do I bake with coconut oil?

Replace other oils or butter at a 1:1 ratio, or for shortening, replace 1 part shortening with 3/4 part coconut oil. Either melt it or use it at room temperature depending on your needs. Keep in mind coconut oil will mix well when the rest of your ingredients are at room temperature. It makes a great replacement for vegetable oils and shortening, which can contain GMOs and Trans fats. Use coconut oil at room temperature for flaky baked products. Melt coconut oil and use it in its liquid state to replace vegetable oil and butter.

What is the difference between “virgin” and “extra virgin” coconut oil?

There is no difference between “virgin” and “extra virgin” coconut oil. Unlike olive oil which has multiple pressings, organic coconut oil has just one pressing. Some countries, like Canada, do not allow the use of the term “extra virgin” to describe coconut oil, only olive oil. While some companies choose to market their product as “extra virgin” in territories where that is allowed, Nutiva has chosen to use the name Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil consistently in all territories where out product is sold.

Does the Best Before date change after opening?

Our products are best if used before the Best Before date on the container, which does not change after opening it.

Do your Coconut Spreads contain palm oil?

Yes, our coconut spreads contain organic, Palm Done Right palm oil, which is ethically sourced from small family farms in Ecuador. Our Palm Done Right palm oil is rainforest safe and habitat friendly.

What is the sugar content of each of your spreads?

Our Almond Coconut Spread & Vanilla Coconut Spread contain 3g of sugar per serving, and our Chocolate Coconut Spread contains 5g of sugar per serving.

Do your Coconut Spreads contain dairy?

No, our Coconut Spreads are 100% plant-based and are naturally vegan & dairy-free.

Are the Nutiva organic hazelnut spreads Certified Gluten Free?

Are chemicals like hexane used during your refining process?

Absolutely not! Our Organic Avocado Oils are steam-refined using an organic process that does not involve the use of any chemicals (like hexane).

Where do you source your organic avocado oil?

We currently source our Organic Avocado Oil from Ethiopia and Spain. The country of origin is stamped on every package and it is accurate.

Is it normal for the Avocado Oil to be cloudy?

Yes, due to its organic nature, Nutiva's Organic Avocado Oil may become naturally cloudy or solidify at lower temperatures. This does not affect quality, is normal, and is to be expected.

Is the Avocado oil adulterated?

We consistently evaluate our oil to protect from adulteration. All of Nutiva's products are also
third party certified USDA Organic by QAI (Quality Assurance International).

Why is my coconut oil liquid?
