Standard shortening is made of less than desirable ingredients, like soy, canola, corn or palm kernel oil. (Palm kernel is the highly- processed, nutrient-void oil derived from the seed, whereas red palm oil comes from the fruit and is nutrient-rich). Often, regular shortening is even hydrogenated; an unnatural process that results in the dreaded trans fats.

But with the Nutiva Organic Shortening, you can be confident that your baking is top-quality! Our shortening consists of an organic blend of virgin coconut and red palm oils. Coconut oil provides the health benefits of lauric acid, while the golden color reveals the presence of antioxidant vitamins A & E, naturally found in red palm oil. The red palm oil is sourced from small, organic family farms in partnership with Natural Habitats™. It does not contribute to deforestation or habitat destruction. In addition to being vegan and free of dairy, soy, and canola, it is organic, Non-GMO and Fair Trade certified.

It is the best choice for baked goods such as pie crusts, biscuits, and cookies that call for a neutral-flavored, dairy-free shortening.

I have used the shortening for pie crust and it turned out great. However, when I used it in cookies, they were dry. Any suggestions to remedy this will be appreciated. I have to stay away from dairy, so this was a great find. I just need help to get my cookies to turn out right.
    Thanks for your help!

Haven’t yet made the Cheddar & Sage Buttermilk Biscuits, but once I checked out the recipe, then bookmarked it to my MAC’S baking book, I knew how fortunate I was to have come across your recipe. Just to let you know, since I don’t use anything by Einkorn flour, which I grind from berries at home, that will what I use for the recipe’s flour ingredient. Tschuess…
