Swap This for That

Making positive changes doesn’t have to be difficult. Today our mission is to help you make the best decisions for improving your life by providing simple ways to swap conventional foods for organic and vegan options in an edition of swap this for that. These days, consumers are looking for and demanding more out of the food they put into their bodies. Where it was once okay to swap fat for its non-fat, plump-full-of-sugar counterpart, it simply is no longer. People are trading in non-fat for full-fat, flavor, unprocessed, real food. They are removing dairy, gluten, sugar, and meat and finding perfect alternatives to fit any lifestyle. We put together a list featuring Nutiva Organic products that are consciously curated and include several ideas on how you can swap this for that.

If you are trying to avoid hydrogenated oils due to the dangers of industrial vegetable oils, try these non-hydrogenated, organic oils:

  1. Virgin Coconut Oil (coconut flavor and scent)
  2. Refined Coconut Oil (unflavored, no scent)

Looking for a rich, buttery flavor without the added chemicals and/or dairy? If it’s simply the rich, buttery texture you are after and not necessarily the smell or color, the Organic & Sustainable Red Palm Oil will fit the bill perfectly. However, if it’s the buttery flavor, smell, and color you’re after, the Organic Buttery Coconut Oil cannot be replaced.

Sugary Nut Butter

The standard nut butter comes without any added sugars, but most nut butters that are “dessert” by nature are filled with sugar, hydrogenated oils, and/or palm oils that wreak havoc on the environment. We have two nut butters that make for your perfect sugary nut butter swap:

  1. Organic Coconut Manna. This is a coconut nut butter that contains just 1g of sugar per serving.
  2. Organic Chocolate Hazelnut Spread. With 40% less sugar than the leading brand, our Organic Chocolate Hazelnut Spread is certified organic and non-GMO, contains 400mg of Omega-3’s from flax and chia and is vegan. (Enjoy these 10 ways to use it.)

Artificially Sweetened Protein

For many, Stevia is a preferred sweetener of choice. But for many others, due to a myriad of reasons, they have chosen to avoid the plant-based sweetener. Some avoid it for health reasons; others based solely on taste. But whatever your reason might be, we have heard the request for a Stevia-free protein, and now we are able to help you make the swap.

Try the new Organic Plant Protein Superfood 30 Shakes, which come in both Chocolate and Vanilla flavors. Additionally, for those who enjoy a pure hemp-based protein, try the Organic Hemp Protein 15g and/or the Organic Hemp Protein Hi Fiber.

Our sweet tooth is just as strong as yours. We love a candy sweet treat just as much as the next, but most candy is host to these 9 GMO ingredients. Most of these candies also contain a large percentage of your daily sugar intake. You can swap the GMOs and empty sugar for a sweet treat like an O’Coconut. Whether you choose the Classic or Hemp & Chia version, these are the perfect delicious anytime treat. With just 60 calories each, they are organic, non-GMO, and fair trade. They don’t contain any corn, soy, or cane sugar. Eat up!

Shortening is a key ingredient in many recipes. The problem is that most shortening products on the market contain partially hydrogenated oils and trans fats. Additionally, most standard shortenings contain dairy, soy and/or canola. You can swap all those shortenings with a Vegan Shortening. This shortening is an organic blend of coconut and palm oils. It is the best choice for baked goods such as pie crusts, biscuits, and cookies that call for a neutral-flavored, dairy-free shortening.

For many people, the egg is a daily staple. Eggs have a nutritional profile that is hard to beat, and yet for many, eggs are either not a part of their diet, by choice and/or by need. It is difficult to replace eggs in some recipes, but for the majority of recipes, Organic Chia Seeds can be the perfect substitution. Mix 1 Tbsp. of chia seed with 3 Tbsp. of water, let sit, and you have a vegan egg replacement for your baking recipes! Chia seeds may be small, but they’re packed with valuable nutrients not often found in other foods. They’re high in antioxidants, Omega-3s, protein and dietary fiber.

Chemical-Filled Body Care Products

Did you know that most body care products are filled with chemicals? From the dirty dozen endocrine disruptors to body care products and cosmetics filled with these 20 toxic ingredients, it’s hard to trust many conventional body care products. You can easily swap many of those products for DIY body care products. Consider using hemp oil to make things like a face mask, moisturizer, and soap.

Or how about using coconut oil and coconut sugar to make a DIY Cinnamon Latte Body Scrub or Homemade DIY Chocolate Coconut Sugar Scrub? Ever considered using simple coconut oil to apply to your hair as a hydrating mask, body wash, used as a gentle eye makeup remover, or combined with sugar to create an exfoliating scrub? The options are endless.

What are some other ways you swap this for that, swapping out conventional products for something more optimal? We’d love to hear about them in the comments below!
