The Basics

There are two main types of coconut oil: virgin and refined. Virgin coconut oil is produced when fresh coconut meat is ground and then cold-pressed. The result is a smooth, slightly sweet coconut flavor and aroma. Refined coconut oil is made from dried coconut meat, called “copra,” and has a higher smoke point along with a neutral scent and flavor. To avoid chemical laden refined coconut oils that have been bleached and deodorized, stick to an organic refined coconut oil made through a steam refining process.
Whether you prefer virgin or refined coconut oil, the good news is that both varieties are rich in lauric and caprylic acids—medium-chain triglycerides that aid in health and wellness.

Using It at Home

One of our favorite things about coconut oil is its versatility. From baking to body care, coconut oil can replace dozens of products in your home, not only eliminating harmful chemicals, but also reducing waste. Keep coconut oil handy in the kitchen for the next time you sauté veggies or whip up a stir fry—it’s a great all-purpose cooking oil and provides an extra punch of flavor to your favorite recipes. It’s also a vegan-friendly replacement for butter when you’re baking cookies or breads.

Today’s beauty products are often packed with chemicals and accompanied by an expensive price tag. Skip the parabens and phthalates hiding in your store-bought moisturizers and hair products and use organic coconut oil on your skin and hair instead. Coconut oil can be applied to your hair as a hydrating mask, used as a gentle eye makeup remover, or combined with sugar to create an exfoliating scrub. Want a brighter smile to complement your healthy skin and hair? Try oil pulling! Simply swish 1-2 teaspoons of coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes each day, before brushing to improve your oral health.
