FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 21, 2015 – Richmond, CA – Nutiva, an Organic Superfoods company, has initiated a voluntary product recall of the following O’Coconut™ products after being notified by a supplier that samples of a raw material in this product have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. “We are choosing to voluntarily recall three of our O’Coconut items as a precautionary measure to provide the safest products for our customers,” states John Roulac, Nutiva’s CEO.
The affected products include:

The latter two items (BAR202 & BAR302) were distributed via Nutiva.com or as samples only.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses.
Consumers who have purchased these items are urged not eat the product, and to dispose of it or return it to the where it was originally purchased. Please be aware that we have received no customer complaints to date about any of the above listed products. Nutiva has taken these steps strictly as a precautionary measure to assure our customers of our commitment to quality. No other Nutiva items are impacted by this recall.

Why is Nutiva Issuing a voluntary recall?

We have been informed that a lot of organic desiccated coconut used in these items tested positive for salmonella. While the three O’Coconut items being recalled have not tested positive for salmonella, as a precautionary measure we are voluntarily recalling all products that contain the raw material from the lot that tested positive.

How is Nutiva informing customers of this voluntary recall?

We are working closely with the FDA to follow all regulations regarding voluntary recalls. In addition to the formal notice posting on the FDAs website we have also sent out a press release, posted a message on Nutiva.com, sent customers a letter and distributed an email to anyone who purchased one of these items on Nutiva.com.

Where might I have purchased these items?

We know all of these products could have been purchased on Nutiva.com between Feb 15th and March 19th 2015. The 8pk pouch is the only impacted item that was available outside of Nutiva.com. We are still working with our retail customers to determine exactly where the 8pk pouch may have been purchased. We urge you to check the expiration date on any O’Coconut product you have as that is the best way to determine if the product you have is affected.

What should I do if I’ve eaten these items?

We have received no health complaints from customers to date. If you feel ill and determine that you need medical attention please contact your doctor. Otherwise please do not consume any additional O’Coconuts from these expiration dates.

How do I know if I have salmonella?

Salmonella is an infection that can cause diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. We urge you to discuss these or any other symptoms you find concerning with your healthcare provider.

Are any other Nutiva items affected?

No.

Are any other Nutiva items produced in that same facility?

No.

Where can I find the date code on these items/How do I know if I purchased these items?

The expiration date can be found on the bottom of each individual O’Coconut pouch next to the UPC.
The expiration date is NOT visible on the outside of the 24 count caddy or the 8 count pouch. The lot code is not visible on the packaging. To confirm if you have one of the impacted items you can confirm with just the expiration date.

Can I tell if a product has salmonella by how it looks or smells?

No you cannot. We urge you to dispose of any O’Coconut product with the affected expiration dates you purchased between Feb 15th and March 19th.

How can I get a refund for my product?

If you purchased this product at Nutiva.com we will issue you a full refund. If you purchased this product at another retailer please return the product to that retailer and they should issue you a full refund. If the retailer will not provide you with a refund please inform us and we will provide you with a gift certificate to Nutiva.com.

Is it okay to continue eating these if I’ve already eaten a few and feel fine?

No. We urge you to dispose of any O’Coconut product you purchased between Feb 15th and March 19th that have the affected expiration dates.

Should I call my doctor if I’ve eaten one of the affected products?

We have not received any health complaints regarding these products to date. If you have any medical concerns we suggest you contact your health care provider.

    I, too, purchased the Tuesday deal featuring the O’Coconut products. I’ve tried the link given for help@nutiva.com, but doesn’t seem to work. I will still purchase from Nutiva, but would very much like a refund, please.

    I ordered the Tue special on 11 Mar 2015. Received 3 boxes of BAR-202 and 3 boxes BAR -302 on 19 Mar 2015. I and two friends consumed 4 pieces of BAR -202 and 6 pieces of BAR 302 . All of boxes of BAR-202 are Exp date code 8 Dec 2015. All of the boxes of BAR -302 are Exp date code 13 Jan 2016. I have been sick since 21 Mar 2015. My two friends have been sick since 22 Mar 2015. I want you to issue me credit on future purchases of Hemp seed only. I will never order, purchase or consume any more of this product !!!!!

    tried to email at help@nutiva.com and it wouldn’t let me go there- I purchased 2 boxes , one regular , and one with hemp and chia seeds during Tues. special, I have eaten several, had no problems, but will not eat any more- I would like 2 more boxes if possible
