Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)

ED NOTE: Nutiva Hemp Oil contains 4-5% GLA by volume and is the only food oil to contain this rare fat.

Overview
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) is an essential fatty acid (EFA) in the omega-6 family that is found primarily in plant-based oils. EFAs are essential to human health but cannot be made in the body. For this reason, they must be obtained from food. EFAs are needed for normal brain function, growth and development, bone health, stimulation of skin and hair growth, regulation of metabolism, and maintenance of reproductive processes.

The Great Fat Debate - Why Virgin Coconut Oil Is Best

There is so much media hype from the mainstream media and leading health authorities, including the naturopathic community, suggesting the many ill effects of consuming Trans Fatty Acids (TFA’s) that the topic of the Great Fat Debate deserves a closer look for the sake of our heath and understanding.

Whilst there is unanimous agreement that TFA’s are problematic and are to be avoided at all costs, some explanations are confusing at best or misleading at worst. It is time for more clarity so we can all choose the fats that are good and avoid those that are bad.

Let’s look at some of these warnings:

Hemp nutrition is not about hype

When you select poppy seed buns at the bakery, are you starting down the slippery slope of opium addiction? When you munch on an energy bar or a breakfast cereal that contains hemp seed, are you in danger of getting high on marijuana?

As a registered dietitian I can assure you that in both cases, the answer is a definite no. Even though the poppy seeds come from a poppy plant, it is the non-narcotic variety. Similarly, hemp seed that is used by the food industry comes from seeds incapable of germination and that have no drug effect.

This knowledge is critical in making good laws because unfortunately, some politicians are trying to ban hemp foods because, as more than one has stated recently, "Hemp foods send the wrong message about drugs to children." I can't imagine the same lawmakers believing that poppy seed buns promote heroin use? Obviously they do not. The reality is that hemp foods send a positive message about healthy eating.

Coconut Oil in Health and Disease: ITS and Monolaurin's Potential as Cure for HIV/AIDS

By Dr. Conrado S. Dayrit

ABSTRACT

The coconut is called the tree of life for it has been providing us, humans, food and drink, materials for housing, fuel and many industrial uses. And its medicinal uses are many and varied. The latest medical potential of products of the coconut first identified by Jon Kabara and others in the 70s, is the anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal activity of its medium chain fatty acids, particularly lauric acid (C12:0) in its monoglyceride form (monolaurin or ML).

The first clinical trial ever of ML was on 15 HIV-infected patients reporting regularly at the San Lazaro Hospital, Manila who, never having received any anti-HIV medication, were randomly assigned to 3 treatment groups: 7.2 g ML, 2.4 g ML and 50 ML of coconut oil daily for 6 months.

Infantile Eczema - Natural Solutions for Common Problems

Natural Treatments Help a Little Girl Get Better

Infantile eczema (IE), a type of atopic (hereditarily influenced) eczema, is a skin condition that produces a red, scaling, thick patch commonly appearing on the flexor aspects of the arms, legs, neck, hands and face. The skin rash can be quite itchy, and it bleeds easily when scratched. It commonly occurs between the ages of 1-3 years, though it's estimated to affect about 10 percent of children under the age of 5 ...

I immediately suggested modifying Brie's diet, using rice milk instead of soy; almond butter and tahini instead of peanut products; and rice, millet or amaranth instead of gluten grains. I also recommended that the mother avoid eating the same foods to decrease Brie's exposure through breast milk. In addition, I started Brie on the following supplement program:

* 1 tablespoon of hemp seed oil per day, added to hot cereals, mashed vegetables or pasta; continued

Seed Your Health

What makes this seed worth eating? For starters, it contains all of the essential amino acids in a balanced ratio, making it a high-quality protein source. A 1-ounce serving of shelled seeds provides 6 percent to 50 percent of the daily value (DV) of several nutrients, including iron, magnesium, and B vitamins. Hemp contains omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids in a beneficial ratio of about 3 to 1, plus two special EFAs: gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), believed to relieve menstrual breast pain (Internal Medicine News, 2001, vol. 34, no. 9), and stearidonic acid (SDA).

Hemp and Flax Seeds and Oil in Modern Nutrition: An Overview

Flax  and hemp, two seed crops grown in the Canadian Prairies, are finding growing demand in the North America market for "natural foods". Both are primarily promoted and consumed as plant-based sources of "omega-3" fatty acids. Flax oil, with a very high content of the essential omega-3 fatty acid ALA, is an excellent supplement but flavor and stability limit its uses. Hemp oil offers a more balanced fatty acid spectrum, including the higher omega-3 SDA; the seeds also provide a reasonably well-balanced protein, significant amounts of vitamin E complex compounds and trace minerals.

Hemp: Nature's Forgotten Nutraceutical

As Seen in Natural Pharmacy Magazine by Darrell L. Tanelian, M.D., Ph.D.

That the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa) is used as food initially surprises and confuses most people. The public information system has largely restricted knowledge of hemp to its use for obtaining marijuana (Cannabis sativa), with its leaf content of the psychoactive substance delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), rope and cloth from the fiber of the plant, and paper from the plant stalk. Yet both the oldest Chinese agricultural treatise, the Xia Xiao Zheng, written in the 16th century BC, and other Chinese records discuss hemp as one of the major grain crops grown in ancient China. 1, 2
